Introduction

Al-Anon/Alateen is a fellowship program designed to help relatives and friends of alcoholics. While it operates separately from Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), it was inspired by AA and shares many of its principles.

Purpose

The purpose of Al-Anon/Alateen is to offer support and understanding to the families and friends of alcoholics. The program aims to:

  • Provide emotional support through meetings and literature.
  • Teach coping skills to deal with the challenges of loving an alcoholic.

Program Structure

Much like AA, Al-Anon/Alateen meetings are held regularly and often follow a Twelve-Step program. These meetings can be:

  • Open - available to anyone interested in Al-Anon/Alateen.
  • Closed - limited to members and prospective members only.

Alateen

Alateen is a part of the Al-Anon fellowship designed for young people, usually teenagers, affected by someone else's drinking. Alateen meetings are led by Al-Anon members and focus on issues relevant to younger people.

Literature

Al-Anon/Alateen has its own range of literature, which includes books, pamphlets, and daily readers designed to offer insight and support. Some popular titles include:

  • One Day at a Time in Al-Anon
  • Courage to Change
  • Alateen: Hope for Children of Alcoholics
