Introduction
In Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), a Sponsor is an experienced member who offers guidance and support to newer members, usually those who are going through the Twelve-Step program. Sponsorship is a key element in AA, promoting individual recovery and fostering a sense of community.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Guidance: Helps the sponsee understand the principles and steps of AA.
- Support: Offers emotional and moral support, especially in times of temptation or crisis.
- Accountability: Encourages the sponsee to take responsibility for their own recovery.
Finding a Sponsor
- Look for someone who has what you want in terms of sobriety and quality of life.
- Attend various AA meetings to meet potential sponsors.
- Ask directly if the person is willing and available to sponsor you.
The Sponsorship Relationship
- It's a mutual relationship, offering benefits to both sponsor and sponsee.
- Boundaries and expectations should be clearly set at the beginning.
- Either party has the freedom to end the sponsorship if it’s not working out.
